Drury School Environment group:
Who are we within the school? An extracurricular group made up of interested students, Teachers and volunteer parents guided by the Enviroschools principles. In acknowledgement of our tremendous achievements we were awarded an Enviroschools Silver Award in 2010.
The Aim of our group: To keep alive our school goals and values and to empower students to create sustainable environments. Together we are learning how to connect respectfully and with cultural awareness to our environment.
How do we achieve this: By becoming involved in school and community projects where “hands on” participation enables children to take ownership, helping to explore key values of ‘Kaitiakitanga’. Projects focus around growing food, enhancing a positive and attractive environment, worm farming, recycling, Wai-care activities and whole school participation in annual environmental events. The learning focus is to study sustainable practices incorporating, customs both past and present, connecting us to our immediate Drury area and to our community.
Lessons that we explore: With every task the children are learning many important life skills. They are learning to be role models of sustainable practices, teachers to their families and peers and future leaders possessing vital knowledge and skills. An important way to cement key values such as respect for self and others, caring for the environment, responsibility. Lend us a hand! We welcome anyone who would like to contribute and participate and share their knowledge with our students. Extended family/whanau all welcome. Ask anyone involved, the rewards are worth it!
